The first few seconds right after delivery often decide if a calf does or does not live! When delivery is difficult, in particular, mucus often penetrates into the calf's repiratory system. This means that fast action is critical!
Often the calf is suspended by the hind legs or held up by two persons, or it is even “draped” across some fence to make the liquid and mucus drip out from the trachea.

An alternative that is not only more efficient but also more gentle on the calf consists in using the new CalfVital Calf Saver. It features a vacuum piston that is easily operated to effect the aspiration manually. A handy funnel mouthpiece is put on the calf's mouth. By simply actuating the piston, the operator effectively pulls out the mucus and liquids from the respiratory tract.
If the calf's own respiration still does not cut in after that, resuscitation may be needed. This is where the second mouthpiece of the CalfVital Calf Saver comes in handy. It allows the delivery attendant to effectively provide assisted respiration to the calf. Its integrated safety valve prevents too high pressure levels in order not to compromise the sensitive pulmonary alveoli.
