The H&L Igloo System allows the constitution of several lots of
calves. It can also be extended module by module when the number of
calves that need a place to sleep grows. Think of a system that
is infinitely extendable, up to several hundreds of calves, while
it does not make room for compromise in terms of animal-friendliness
and work efficiency. Its flexibility ensures that all feeding schemes
are compatible with the system. Of course, it is possible to include
the frost-proof H&L 100 Automated Calf Feeder as an optional extra.
Still, it also allows traditional feeding techniques, such as
teat bucket feeding with our dedicated feed fence.

Plenty of Fresh Air for Healthy Calves
Outdoor calf housing is particularly suitable for healthy calf
rearing. Fresh air and the so-called outdoor climate effect
make your calves strong and resistant. |
Weather-independent Operation
While feeding or looking after the calves in the
group or single-calf igloos, the farmer is protected
from bad weather. Large overhangs of the roof cover the bedding
against precipitations and
offer shade when needed. |
Optimum Protection and Good Micro-climate
The H&L Igloo's domed design is the cause for
its various advantages. Fresh air is supplied through
the entrance opening. The thermal behaviour of the air
causes the warmer exhaust air to rise to the top of the
Igloo where it leaves through the four ventilation
shafts. Therefore, no undesirable draught can form in
the calves resting area. In addition to this, winds hitting
the Igloo from outside create a suction effect at the
top that results in improved ventilation. |
Fast Installation
The H&L Igloo System gives us the opportunity to
offer you the complete product as a modular do-it-yourself
installation kit. It includes the group and single-calf igloos, and the
full roof for the feeding and exercise area to go along with them.
Supplied equipments include hot-dip galvanised gates and bulk feed
troughs and concentrate dispensers made of stainless steel. |
Calves Are Free to Choose Where They Want to Be
In addition to the approx. 15mē of space in the
H&L Igloo, the animals have a further 25mē of
roofed space for resting. Thus, the calves can
choose themselves whether they want to be:
inside the H&L Igloo in bad weather or on the
bedding spread in the exercise area when the
weather is fine. |
Integration of an H&L 100
The Automated Calf Feeder H&L 100 ensures
a labour-saving and physiologically sound milk
diet. As it is frost-proof, its installation in a H&L
Igloo System does not require a protective locale.
The H&L 100's patented Ration-Oriented Mixing
System, dubbed TOM, offers very good milk
replacer solubility and ensures optimum ration
temperature even when the mixer bowl and the
hose to the teat have cooled substantially overnight. |
Bedding and Ridding
Depending on the number of calves, new bedding
should be spread in the igloos about two
or three times a week and they should be rid of
manure approximately every two weeks. They are supplied
with a solid transport hook that allows lifting
and moving them easily with a front loader.
When ridding manure is finished, the Igloo is simply re-attached
to the fencing with a chain. The set-up of
the fencing should allow locking the calves up in
the pens while the Igloo is being cleaned. |
Combining Old and New
An animal-friendly set-up at a reasonable price
is to combine an existing barn (feeding area), the
H&L Igloo (resting area), and an exercise area. Thus,
a use of the existing structure that makes
sense is achieved, and if a concrete surface exists
outdoor, no further construction work is needed.
During cleaning, the animals are locked up in
the existing structure, and the working person is
undisturbed. |
