Rearing calves in igloos during the first days and weeks of their life has established itself
for good reasons as the animal-friendly and hygienic husbandry design of choice not only in Germany, but
around the world. Low levels of bacteria load thanks to the outdoor climate, easy cleaning,
and the possibility to relocate them are the main reasons in favour of housing calves in the open.
Holm & Laue nows adds the possibility to operate individual igloo husbandry under a roofing,
introducing the Calf Camp.
The H&L Calf Camp is a mobile roofing to cover individual igloos, built on the proven
concept of the H&L Igloo Verandah and meant to serve in lot husbandry set-ups. The Calf Camp
roof is sufficient to cover a 2 by 5 individual igloo set-up, which are placed facing each other
with the exercise area between them. Between the lines of igloos, a roofed alley about 2.5 metres wide is set, to
access the igloos. The roof creates a fine work environment for humans and protects feed and bedding in the
exercise area from precipitations. It also is a sun screen in summer, when days are hot. Since wheels are fitted
to the structure, the Calf Camp can be relocated, so it is possible to set the igloos onto a new spot
with low bacteria levels again and again. As the H&L Calf Camp forms a stand-alone unit, almost all
individual igloos available on the market can be used in combination with the Calf Camp.
