Calf Husbandry

Outdoor pens are particularly suitable for healthy calf rearing. Fresh air and the so-called outdoor climate effect make your calves strong and resistant. With such a husbandry design, it is important to offer the calves, young calves in particular, a zone with its own micro-climate in which the calves are protected from bad weather.

Another issue is optimum work efficiency. As early as during the planning and construction of the facility, attention should be paid to proper work flows and the flexibility that will allow adapting the calf pen to the growth of the operation in general.

Based on the H&L Group Igloo, which has stood the test in thousands of operations around the world, Holm & Laue offers various husbandry designs. The groundwork is laid by the proven two-area concept in all cases: its own micro-climate inside the H&L Igloo and unmitigated outdoor climate in the roofed area in front of it.

Depending on the size of the farm and its local conditions, we offer two types of system:

• The H&L Igloo System allows the constitution of several lots of calves. It is also possible to extend it module by module when more calves need a place to sleep. Added versatility is provided by the fact that all types of feeding scheme are compatible with this system.
• The H&L Igloo Verandah, featuring a mobile, roofed exercise area, is especially suited for smaller and medium-sized operations. Within a single day, you will build a calf housing for 14 calves that ideally combines calf health and work efficiency!
